THE CANDIDACY BRIEF

A Strong Career
Does Not Make a Strong Applicant.
A Candidacy Strategy Does.

You are an accomplished executive. But do you have a strategy to communicate your candidacy with the clarity, precision and strength admissions committees expect?

Through the Candidacy Brief, Jeffrey Robinson, CFA examines your career, sharpens your goals, identifies the programs that fit and builds a strategy for communicating your candidacy throughout the EMBA application process and beyond.

01What have you built?

02Where are you going?

03What do you need from an EMBA?

04What is your Candidacy Strategy?

I had spent twenty years building my career. But I had never written it down with the weight my accomplishments actually deserved until my work with Jeffrey.

The Real Problem

“Most EMBA rejections are not failures of credentials. They are failures in communicating your candidacy. That gap is where strong EMBA candidates are declined admission.”

The Candidacy Must Be Built Before the Application

Most senior executives arrive at the EMBA application with a career that is far more impressive and valuable than they are capable of communicating to admissions committees. They have led organizations, carried real risk and made critical decisions, yet they have difficulty putting this value into words. The obstacle is perspective: an executive immersed in a career seldom has the space to step back, judge the whole of it and shape its complexity into a strategic story told through the narrow format of application questions. The Candidacy Brief restores that perspective.

The Candidacy Brief is the strategic foundation of every Robinson Advisors engagement. For most clients, it is the first step of the Full Engagement, which carries the resulting candidacy strategy through the entire EMBA application process.

AN EXECUTIVE PEER, NOT AN EDITOR

Judgment Earned Through 20+ Years of Experience

The Candidacy Brief is conducted by Jeffrey Robinson personally, with no associates and no handoffs. An advisor who has lived a senior executive's career produces a sharper, more insightful assessment of a senior executive's candidacy, and most admissions consultants have never held such a role. Jeffrey has worked in investment banking, fund management, derivatives trading and entrepreneurship, the same disciplines his clients come from. He has structured deals, put his own capital at risk and built companies, which is why he can look at an executive record and see at once what carries weight, what is undersold and what an admissions committee will value only when it is backed by substantiated evidence. He finds the restructuring you led or the business you built from nothing, the achievement you stopped mentioning years ago, and recognizes it as one of the most valuable assets in your candidacy.

I have sat in the chair my clients sit in. That is what lets me tell them what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.
FOUR QUESTIONS

Where the Candidacy Is Actually Built

The Candidacy Brief moves through four connected questions, in sequence. The evaluation of each produces conclusions upon which the next questions build. Together, they become the case for your candidacy that EMBA admissions committees need to see.

PART 1: THE RECORDWhat have you built?

“Most clients have never seen their career set down as the asset it is. The first thing we do is correct that by building the executive CV your accomplishments deserve.”

An Honest Accounting of the Career You Have Built

The Candidacy Brief starts with an examination of what you have built: the expertise you have developed, the organizations you have led, the decisions you have owned and the successes and failures that shaped your judgment. Jeffrey separates the accomplishments that carry real weight from the ones that merely fill a page and identifies the weaknesses in your candidacy that admissions committees will highlight. The examination produces an executive CV, rebuilt line-by-line. It also surfaces what most candidates overlook: what you bring to the peer executives who will sit beside you in your EMBA class. Admissions committees are building a cohort, not filling seats, and candidates who can explicitly communicate their intended contributions stand apart from those who do not.

PART 2: THE HORIZONWhere are you going?

“Many clients arrive with modest plans for their future and leave the Candidacy Brief with clearly defined ambitions they had never permitted themselves to consider.”

A Future More Credible Than You Envisioned

Your goals upon graduation, five years out and twenty years beyond are rarely as defined or as ambitious as your career path supports. Jeffrey thinks alongside you as an executive peer, opening career trajectories you had not considered and pressing your ambitions until they become more expansive and more defensible, yet still grounded in what your record can support. Each goal is then tested against a realistic horizon and broken into the steps it demands, placing the EMBA as a decisive move within your larger career.

PART 3: THE FITWhat do you need from an EMBA?

“Most executives pursue an EMBA because they know they should. Few can clearly articulate what they need it to deliver to reach their goals.”

What You Actually Need From an EMBA

Few EMBA candidates ever establish, with any precision, what they need the program to deliver: what knowledge to gain, what network to build, what perspectives to challenge. The executive who can answer these questions draws a far greater return on the EMBA investment than one who cannot. The answers also determine which EMBA programs genuinely fit; here, Jeffrey guides the choice from direct experience of what each program delivers rather than from its ranking. Most importantly, these answers settle what to concentrate on once admitted, shaping which courses you take, which relationships you build and where you direct your energy once the program begins.

Taking full advantage of the EMBA once admitted also depends on practical readiness. Jeffrey advises clients in thinking through and preparing for the conversations and negotiations this requires, whether with an employer, senior colleagues who will absorb added responsibility, or family, so the arrangements are in place to get the most from your EMBA experience.

PART 4: THE CASEWhat is your Candidacy Strategy?

“Top-tier EMBA admissions committees admit you on the case you communicate throughout the application process, not on the career you have had. The Candidacy Brief is where the strategy for that case is developed.”

Your EMBA Candidacy Communication Strategy

This is where the outcomes of every prior step in the Candidacy Brief become a single argument: how to present your record, your goals and your program fit so an admissions committee reaches one conclusion, that you are a candidate it must have in its EMBA cohort. It also determines who is best positioned to corroborate that argument from the outside, since the executives you ask to recommend you must speak to the specific case you are making, not offer generic praise. Jeffrey captures the strategy in a document containing:

  • Candidacy Summary: Your candidacy in its sharpest form, including your record, goals and EMBA rationale, drawn into one coherent case.
  • Program Selection Fit: Which EMBA programs best match your goals.
  • Cohort Contribution: What you bring to the peer executives who will sit beside you, speaking to the cohort a committee is assembling.
  • What the Committee Will Question: Gaps and concerns an admissions committee will scrutinize, identified and answered to resolve in advance.
  • Recommender Strategy: Who is best placed to serve as a reference, what each should focus on, and how to approach and support them.
  • Action Plan: The concrete steps from where you stand now to a finished, compelling application.

Together these become what you carry forward: a rigorous assessment of your EMBA candidacy, a polished executive CV, a compelling set of future goals and a clear strategy for communicating your candidacy throughout the EMBA admissions process.
