WHERE THE ENGAGEMENT BEGINS

The Candidacy Brief

“Most EMBA essays fail for the same reason: strong material, but no argument connecting it. The Candidacy Brief supplies that argument, before a single essay is written.”

THE CANDIDACY STRATEGY THAT GOVERNS YOUR EMBA APPLICATION

Every engagement begins with the candidacy strategy, built through four connected parts:

  • The Record: an honest accounting of what you have built
  • The Horizon: defined, ambitious & credible goals
  • The Fit: what you need from an EMBA & which programs can deliver it
  • The Case: your candidacy strategy to communicate it all to earn admission

This phase also addresses the practical realities of pursuing the program, including the conversations and negotiations required with an employer, senior colleagues or family. The result of this work is the Candidacy Brief that becomes the governing logic for every decision made through the rest of the engagement:

  • Rebuilt, polished executive CV
  • Candidacy Summary
  • Program Selection Fit
  • Cohort Contribution
  • What the Committee Will Question
  • Recommender Strategy
  • Action Plan
A ONCE-IN-A-CAREER SKILL

One Chance to Get It Right

Most senior executives underestimate what the EMBA application actually requires. Despite the strength of your career, the challenge is the unique skillset and expert judgment needed to carry a defensible case for admission through your CV, essays, recommendations and interviews. This is a skillset normally developed through repeated practice, and a once-in-a-career undertaking gives no opportunity to build it in advance.

Some executives attempt the process alone and discover too late how difficult it is to see their own record clearly enough to argue it well. Some engage an advisor inexperienced with the requirements of a senior executive candidacy and submit an application that argues a weaker case than their candidacy deserves. Some come to Jeffrey only after being rejected from a prior application that failed to make the strongest possible case. In each instance, what was missing was the experienced judgment to carry a candidacy strategy through an actual application, under real deadlines, the first and only time this particular task would be faced.

That same judgment means telling a client when an essay is not yet making its case with a deadline close, when their preferred recommender is not the one who will help their candidacy most or when the program they are leaning toward is not actually the stronger fit. This ability to be honest and direct comes from Jeffrey's senior standing and professional experience. An advisor capable and willing to say these things produces a stronger candidacy.

Your candidacy strategy sets the direction. Every decision after, in each essay, recommender conversation and interview, must be made with precision. That is where 20+ years of direct experience shows its value.
THE EXECUTION PHASE

Where Strategy Becomes Admission

Once your candidacy strategy is carefully established, the second phase of the engagement carries it through every required component of the application: essays, the application form, recommenders, interviews, correspondence and the final decision.

1. ESSAY DEVELOPMENT

“A good essay does not just describe an experience. It argues a case for your candidacy. That is the test every draft has to pass.”

Your Candidacy Strategy, Implemented Essay-by-Essay

The candidacy strategy establishes what the essays need to argue and which experiences carry the most weight in making that argument. Jeffrey applies that strategy to each specific essay prompt: advising which material belongs in which essay, the level of emphasis each element deserves, and where the argument needs to be sharper. Each essay is shaped and refined, draft by draft, for every program, until it makes the strongest possible case for your candidacy.

2. APPLICATION FORM

“Most candidates treat the application form as paperwork. A committee reads every field as evidence.”

Every Field in the Application Carries Weight

The application form demands more careful attention than most candidates give. Beyond the standard biographical and professional entry forms, most EMBA applications include short-answer questions, activity descriptions and other written components that form part of the committee's first impression of the candidacy. Jeffrey advises on each component, ensuring the answers are consistent with the candidacy strategy and every other application element.

3. RECOMMENDER BRIEFING

“A recommendation should tell the committee something the essays cannot. If it only repeats what the essays already say, it has not added value.”

Recommenders Are Selected & Briefed With Purpose

The candidacy strategy identifies who is best placed to corroborate your candidacy, not simply who is most senior. The strongest recommendations offer insight that more credibly comes from someone else's perspective than the candidate's own. Most recommenders have never done this before, have little time to give it proper attention, and are often left to guess at what to say, so even a sincere effort can end up adding little value. Jeffrey advises on how to brief and support each recommender, so their contribution adds real strength to your candidacy.

4. INTERVIEW PREPARATION

“Each interview question is meant to test the strength of the case for your candidacy, and whether you can articulate and defend it with clarity and conviction.”

Prepare for the Questions Your Application Will Invite

Jeffrey identifies what aspects of your candidacy are likely to attract scrutiny during the interview for each program. Preparation includes mock interviews covering both the commonly asked questions and, more importantly, the specific ones your application is likely to invite. The goal is a clear command of your candidacy so that any question, expected or not, can be met with precision.

5. PROGRAM CORRESPONDENCE

“When most candidates think their application is complete, the admissions committee is still evaluating. Every exchange that follows reflects on your candidacy and your chances for admission.”

The Candidacy Argument Does Not Stop at Submission

Many applications call for a response after the original submission: a request to clarify or supplement a specific element of your admissions file, a deferred decision or a waitlist placement. Each of these is a moment where the candidacy either advances or loses ground, and the response needs to carry the same argument as the original application, not open a different one. Jeffrey advises on the appropriate response for each situation, including the right tone, the specific aspect of the candidacy to address and what the committee is likely testing with the request.

6. POST-ADMISSION SUPPORT

“Admission is not the finish line. What happens between the offer and the first day of class needs the same judgment as everything that came before it.”

The Work That Comes After Admission

For candidates admitted to more than one program, choosing between offers is a strategic question in its own right, using the same analysis that shaped the original program selection: which program actually serves your goals at this stage in your career. After accepting enrollment, every client still has to secure the practical arrangements an EMBA actually requires, an employer's support, colleagues willing to absorb added responsibility and a family prepared for what the program will demand, and Jeffrey advises directly on each of these conversations.

CLIENT RESULTS

What Senior Executives Say

“I had worked with a well-regarded advisor the year before. The essays were well-written and organized. They just did not argue the right case for my candidacy. Working with Jeffrey, I understood the difference immediately, and the second attempt produced a successful application and admission to my goal program.”
Managing Director
Financial Services · Saudi Arabia
INSEAD GEMBA
“I applied to three programs in the same cycle. Each recommender received specific guidance on what their recommendation needed to address and on what the other recommendations in the same application would cover. I had not considered that kind of coordination before. It changed the result.”
Senior Executive
Investment Firm · Qatar
London Business School EMBA
“I was admitted to two programs I had ranked differently before the process began. The analysis of which to choose was built on the same framework as the program selection at the start: which one actually serves where I said I was going. The answer was not the one I had assumed.”
Chief Financial Officer
Energy Company · UAE
Wharton EMBA
“I was on the waitlist at my first-choice program. The follow-up correspondence was advised on carefully and specifically. I was admitted six weeks later. I am confident I would have sent the wrong recommendation without that guidance.”
Director
Family Business · Kuwait
Chicago Booth EMBA
“I attempted the process the first time without advisory support. The application was not weak, but the decisions I made about which experiences to include and how to position my goals were less calibrated than I realized at the time. My reapplication with Jeffrey's advice was a different kind of effort. The resulting admission was the proof.”
General Manager
Regional Conglomerate · Saudi Arabia
INSEAD GEMBA
“My file was unusual in a way I knew would attract scrutiny at interview. Jeffrey identified precisely where the committee's questions would go and we worked through each one before the interview took place. The conversation followed the terrain he had mapped almost exactly.”
Head Of Strategy
Sovereign Fund · UAE
London Business School EMBA
“The essays for each program were built on the same underlying candidacy argument but calibrated for what each committee was most likely to weigh. That calibration, applied to each application separately, produced a different quality of result than anything I could have managed independently.”
Chief Operating Officer
Logistics · Saudi Arabia
HEC Paris EMBA
“I had worked with a reputable firm the year before. The support was professional and well-organized, but the advisor did not understand my professional context at the level the candidacy required. Jeffrey's own background as an executive with real-world experience closed that gap starting in our very first session.”
Senior Vice President
Sovereign Wealth Institution · UAE
NYU Stern EMBA
“The preparation sessions were the most demanding professional challenge I had faced in some time. When the committee's questions came, they felt like the easier version.”
Managing Director

Wharton EMBA
“Jeffrey told me things about my file no one else had been willing to say. It was not always comfortable to hear, but it was exactly what I needed before I submitted anything.”

“What I carried out of this engagement was not just the admission. It was the clearer understanding of my own career that made the application possible.”
